Prof Zilbauer is a clinician scientist and paediatric gastroenterologist who specialises in intestinal epithelial cell biology. Matthias obtained his MD from the University of Mainz, Germany and a PhD in mucosal immunology from University College in London, UK. A major focus of his research lies on investigating the role of DNA methylation in regulating intestinal epithelial cell function during human gut development, homeostasis and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. Prof Zilbauer’s group has extensive experience in the generation and application of human, mucosa derived intestinal epithelial organoids as translational research tools to study pathophysiology and translate findings from bench to bedside. Matthias was recently awarded a prestigious New Investigator Grant from the Medical Research Council allowing him to pursue translational research in paediatric IBD.

As part of the OrganoVIR project, Matthias collaborates wit Prof. Ian Goodfellow on several projects studying viral host-cell interactions in order to elucidate both viral and intestinal epithelial cell factors that contribute to disease pathogenesis.
