30 Aug Developing Treatments for Acute Gastroenteritis

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain are the most common symptoms of acute gastroenteritis – a disease that occurs when food or water that is contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms or their toxins is consumed.

Currently, there are no antiviral drugs available to prevent or treat viral gastroenteritis. Organoid technologies are able to facilitate studies that can accelerate antiviral research and the development of preventive or curative antiviral therapies and to eradicate knowledge gaps that hinder the development of treatments.

In her first OrganoVIR publication, our ESR Nânci Ferreira highlights the culprits of acute gastroenteritis, antivirals that were identified as having in vitro and/or in vivo activity against these viruses, and how recent advances in model systems – such as organoid technologies – can be used as an effective and accurate alternative to study gastroenteritis.
